Gulammohammed Sheikh was born in 1937 in Saurashtra. He has done his Masters in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University, Vadodara, and has studied at the Association for Research into Crimes against Art (ARCA), London. His awards include: Kalidas Sanman (2002), Madhya Pradesh Government; Ravishankar Rawal Award (1998-99), Gujarat Government; Padmashri (1983), Government of India; Commonwealth Scholarship (1963-66), Royal College of Art, London; National Award (1962), Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. His important solo exhibitions include: City, Kaavad and Other Works (2011), presented by Vadehra Art Gallery at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Kaavad: Traveling Shrine: Home (2008), Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University of Baroda; Mappings (2004), organized by The Guild, Mumbai at The Museum Gallery, Mumbai; Palimpsest (2001), Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai, Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai; Tree of Life (1996), mural at Vidhan Bhavan, Bhopal; Returning Home, a Retrospective Selection of Work from 1968 to 1985 (1985), Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee National d'Art Modeme, Paris. The artist lives and works in Vadodara.
