Born in 1961, Singh trained at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and the International Centre for Photography, New York. She started out, like many of her peers, in the field of photojournalism before going on to a genre that she has since perfected, of the photobook. Working with publisher Gerhard Steidl, she has published a series of volumes including Privacy (2003), Go Away Closer (2006), Sent a Letter (2008), House of Love (2011) and File Room (2013). More recently, she has experimented with alternative forms of exhibition through the unique device of the travelling or mobile museum, a project that has undergone various iterations in London, Frankfurt, Chicago and Delhi. The ongoing Museum Bhavan series brings together Singh’s entire oeuvre as a photographer beginning in 1981, arranged in different, whimsical compilations. She is a recipient of the Chevalier dans L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2014), the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards (2017), and the International Center of Photography Infinity Award for Artist’s Book (2018). Singh lives and works in Delhi.
