Ram Kumar


Ram Kumar was born in 1924 in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. He studied at the Sharada Ukil School of Art, New Delhi. He has an MA in Economics from St. Stephens College, Delhi University, New Delhi, and has studied painting under Andre Lhote and Fernand Leger, Paris. His important retrospective exhibitions include: Ram Kumar: A Retrospective, (2011), Aicon Gallery, London; Works from 1949-93 (1994), National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi, and at NGMA, Mumbai, and Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, organized by Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. His important solo exhibitions include: Ram Kumar and the Bombay Progressives: The Form and the Figure Part I (2013), Aicon Gallery, New York; Homage to Kekoo Gandhy (2008), Chemould Prescott Road, Mumbai; Ram Kumar - A Journey Within (1996), Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. His group exhibitions include: Pioneers of Modernism (2013), Sovereign FZE, Dubai; Modern Masters (2011), Aicon Gallery, New York; Freedom 2008 - Sixty Years of Indian Independence (2008), Centre for International Modern Art (CIMA), Kolkata.

The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
