K K Hebbar


Born in 1911 in Karnataka, Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar received his diploma from the Sir J J School of Art in 1938. In 1949, he went on to study at the Academy Julian in Paris. Hebbar was a part of several important shows both in India and abroad including the Venice Biennale, the Sao Paulo Biennale and the Tokyo Biennale. Hebbar’s Mahim Darga won him the National Award in 1956 to be followed by awards in the annual exhibitions of the in 1957 and 1958. He received the Gold Medal of the Bombay Art Society in 1947. He was Chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1980 and President of the Bombay Art Society in 1990. Hebbar was awarded the Padamshri in 1961 and the Padma Bhushan in 1989.

He died at the age of 85 in 1996.
