Born in Jorosanko, Calcutta, Abanindranath Tagore (1871- 1951) studied at the Government School of Art, Calcutta and trained under the Italian artist, Olinto Ghilardi. In 1907, Tagore established the Indian School of Oriental Art and founded ‘The Bengal School’, which was responsible in pioneering the Bengal Revivalist movement. Under his guidance, a new generation of painters was raised, like Nandalal Bose, Asit Halder, Kshitindranath Majumder and Jamini Roy, and a host of others. He joined the Government College of Art, Calcutta in 1905 as the Vice Principal under Dr. E.B. Havell. Tagore was highly influenced by the Mughal and Rajput styles of painting and he sought to modernise these styles to shift the focus from the Western models of art. His paintings were exhibited in India as well as in London, Paris, Japan and Switzerland. He died in 1951.
