Nicholas Roerich


Nicholas Roerich(1874-1947) was a Russian artist, writer, archaeologist, philosopher and traveller. He was born in St. Petersburg. In 1893, he enrolled simultaneously in the University Faculty of Law and the Emperor’s Academy of Arts. In 1928, his family settled in the Himalayan foothills where they established the headquarters of the Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute. In 1929, Roerich was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the University of Paris. He died in Kullu in 1947.
