Born in 1902 in Dhubri, Assam; B C Sanyal was an Indian painter, sculptor and an art teacher to three generations of artists. He was one of the most influential figures of modernism in India. Sanyal studied at the Government College of Art & Craft (GSAC), Calcutta. Later, he joined the Serampore College of Art, where he spent 6 years practising and teaching both painting and sculpture. He also taught at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore. He was instrumental in founding the Delhi Silpi Chakra. Sanyal was awarded the Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship for lifetime achievement by Lalit Kala Akademi in 1980. He was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award in 1984, Visva Bharati University’s Gagan Abani Puraskar in 1993 and the Government of Assam’s Sankar Dev award in 1999. He passed away in the year 2003 in Delhi.
