Mohanlal Ganguly


Born in 1907, Mohanlal Gangoly was Abanindranath Tagore’s grandson. He completed his higher studies in London at a young age and joined the Bengal Chamber of Commerce after returning to India. He was also a member of Indian Statistical Institute. Mohanlal wrote several books and essays to commemorate his uncles’ art. The most famous amongst them is ‘Dakshiner Baranda’ based on the reminiscences of the Tagore house in Jorosanko, Calcutta.

Looking at a beautiful piece of art and admiring it one feels that the artist who produced it is a creator. But observing an artist for a long time, rather closely seeing him work at his model, one feels less inclined to call him a creator. He will appear to be rather in the nature of a discoverer.
