Paritosh Sen was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1918. He received his Diploma in Fine Arts from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras in 1940, and was a founding member of the Calcutta Group which was created in 1942. He went on to study in Paris at the Academie Andre Lhote, painting at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, murals at Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts and the History of painting at the Ecole du Louvre between 1950-1953. Honoured with a French fellowship for Designing and Typeface in 1969, as well as the John D. Rockefeller III grant in 1970-71, he has also been the recipient of the Abanindra Puraskar from the government of West Bengal. In his long and illustrious career Paritosh Sen has held over 30 solo shows across India and has participated in over a 100 group shows, exhibiting at the Commonwealth Arts Festival, London in both 1965 and 1986, the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil in 1965, II Havana Biennale Cuba in the year 1986.

Currently Sen lives and works in Kolkata, India.
